The Tao According to Ilja

by sara bertoni
In 1997 Ilja Visser attended the School of Arts in Arnhem, the Netherlands to study Fashion Design. Ilja interned at Donna Karan (www.donnakaran.com) in New York and Maria Cornejo Zero Red DaDa (www.mariacornejo.com).
After graduation Ilja moved to Milan to discover the roots of fashion, fabulous fabrics and inspiring design. It was here she laid the foundation of her ambition, realized in 2005, to introduce her own label.
Ilja Visser opened the 7th edition of International Amsterdam Fashion Week (AIFW). Inspired by Benjamin Hoff’s world’s bestselling book The Tao of Pooh, Ilja Visser presented her SS 08 collection, which combines the rebel feel of her target group with a simple yet always positive view of the world.
Spring/Summer 2008 prêt-to-porter collection ELLE
by sara bertoni
On Friday the 27th of July 2007 Elle presented its Spring/Summer 2008 prêt-to-porter collection, a collection that captures a soft Metropolitan futurism with sport-luxe inspirations in silvery hues and translucent acid colours. Silhouettes are evident and outspoken with soft volume on the top exaggerated by dropped shoulder seams and a marked waistline above slim fitted bottoms. The prêt-à-porter label is designed by International Dutch design duo Oscar Raaijmakers and Süleyman Demir: an exciting and experienced design team led by the Artistic Director Nikki Hillier.
Amsterdam: Are men ready for jewellery?

by sara bertoni
This Valentine’s Day, I avoided the typical cozy movie night with flowers and did something different. I went to the super trendy restaurant Envy in Amterdam. The occasion: The new Thomas Sabo Sterling Silver Collection unisex line.
Thomas Sabo has given the silver jewellery market an entirely new appearance – and redefined its self-understanding. In the past men usually entered a Thomas Sabo Shop to buy a wonderful present for their women. But from now on there is one more convincing reason for them to do so: the new Sterling Silver Collection for the spring and summer of 2007 includes Thomas Sabo’s first ever Silver Jewellery & Accessories collection specifically for both sexes!Amsterdam: What's with the Voodoo Swatch?
by sara bertoni
I still remember when, 10 years ago, Swatch was THE WATCH to have! People wanted the latest limited edition of this amazing watch and if you couldn't have it, well... you were out.
The Swatch stores in Amsterdam and Rotterdam have been recently entirely renovated and I was invited to the opening. I was really curious to see if my old loved watch could take my heart again.

ELLE STYLE AWARDS 2007 at Energetica
The most talked about party of the Amsterdam Fashion Week was the ELLE STYLE AWARDS. And that wasn't because of their cocktails (more about them later).
The Elle Style Awards started in 2004 and are growing bigger and bigger every year. This year, they were held at the museum Energetica in Amsterdam on the second day of the Amsterdam fashion week. Sponsored by H&M, Nokia, Frieda and Nissan, the Elle Style Awards aim is to choose the best up coming styling talent of the year.
Amsterdam: From factory to fashion
by sara bertoni
Amsterdam Fashion Week kicked off with official opening party that included a martini bar with the unforgettable cocktails. A waitress in a petticoat served champagne and white chocolate strawberries. Then, at the end of the evening, she did the rounds again with French fries for everybody. Well, I was pretty shocked about this, but hey, we are in Holland, don’t forget!
But I’m not going talk about the cocktails... What I would like to tell you about is about the location - the Westergasfabrik - because I think it's absolutely stunning!
Amsterdam: Fashionistas go Dutch
FASHION WEEK AMSTERDAM 20-28 JANUARY 2007
A fashion week in Amsterdam? All my international friends who work in fashion in Paris, London and Milan couldn’t believe when in 2004 Amsterdam presented the first AMSTERDAM INTERNATIONAL FASHION WEEK.
But as Renate Peters (manager at House of Orange Models) said: AIFW is getting bigger, better and more every season! Even the street fashion is picking up – soooo… welcome back AIFW!
Fast forwarding to the present, many prestigious brands, designers and companies have joined. The objective of AIFW is to run talent into business, which makes the number of recent successes very encouraging.
Madrid: Nudity in Spanish cinema

by ben curtis
The other night I was speaking with Marina and a friend, Yolanda, about Spanish films and, in particular, the classic Jamon Jamon. Yolanda thought that it really went for the dark side of Spanish life (whorehouses, amateur bull taunting, violence), and Marina commented that Penelope Cruz, then 16, portrayed a strongly sexual role. My reaction was: “Typical Spanish film”.
Amsterdam: Who wants to be a millionaire?

by sara bertoni
The Millionaire Fair is THE event in Amsterdam. The organizers shocked the Netherlands in 2002 by organizing an event unparalleled in luxury and size. 'A fairytale for the affluent, a cornucopia for culinary fans and a feast of superlatives', said the press.
Initiator Gijrath Media Groep, publisher of Miljonair Magazine, launched the idea for the Millionaire Fair on the basic theme of their magazine: 'The Luxury Lifestyle’ – and in 2003 the fair quadrupled in terms of size and numbers of visitors, this year over 40.000 with 210 exhibitors/participants.
For Dutch high-society members, the VIP night of the Millionaire Fair Amsterdam has become the most important event of the year, tickets over 300 euros, if you want to be with the stars.
Madrid: What every girl wants for Christmas
by almendro
We first noticed them a couple of years ago. Calf-high, low-heeled (no heeled, really), lace-up horrors masquerading as women’s footwear. Suddenly, they were everywhere, filling scores of shop windows with their hideousness, marring the lower extremities of nearly every female under 40. Somehow, wrestling boots had become hip.
Paris: Fabrica: Five day to fabulous
by sam baron
As a part of the Fabrica exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Fabrica Design Department created a temporary store that will only last for five months. The store is a project exploring the process of creating a retail space using materials and local resources.
Where is all this taking place? Artés 135, rue Saint Martin, 75003 Paris. And when? 6 October - 13 November 2006
The concept behind the store is this: Five designers had five days to make the space and 50 products to display. Each designer was involved in sharing their personal and cultural views on the retail experience. Concept, resourcing, organization, and execution was a collective effort.
Inside the store you'll find a shelving sculpture made out of metro shelving in the gallery space, a stock room of yellow customised products, a colors magazine reading room, as well as many Fabrica Features objects made specifically for the store.
Amsterdam: La Kate at Foam
by sara bertoni
From September 15 to December 14 2006, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam presents ‘The Kate Show’. An exhibition focusing on style icon, super-model and muse Kate Moss.
Why, after recent scandals, is Kate Moss still the leader of the supermodel pack? What is it about Kate Moss that makes her so compelling? Amsterdam’s Foam Gallery decided to find out, inviting artists and photographers from around the world to give their take on Kate’s appeal.
Paris: Valley of the Dolls
Walking through Galeries Lafayette today, I stumbled on Christian Dior, John Galliano, Kenzo, Christian Lacroix, Valentino, Versace couture fashions, but they were adorning big-eyed Blythe dolls.

Paris: Rick Owens Opens at Palais Royal

Break the piggy bank. Rick Owens, the Paris-based designer originally from Los Angeles, has quietly opened up a boutique at Palais Royal (130 Galerie de Valois). The space is both stark and cozy, with clothing hanging from simple metal racks, walls damaged with imperfections, and the flat carpet spotted and faded. Dark felt, one of the designer’s favorite materials, covers one wall, and pieces of chunky furniture he also designs fill out the store.
