What are Icelanders really proud of? Bjork?
We’re a proud nation so there are a lot of things I could mention. Of course it’s great how many artists are doing well abroad, especially in music, following into Bjork’s footsteps (who is without doubt the most famous Icelander). But we’re also very proud of our nature; pure water and clear sky that give us strength and creativity.
Icelanders are perceived as either taciturn or crazy (see Bjork above) - what's the real picture?
I guess we’re a little bit of everything! Bjork though does not portray the typical Icelander , I don´t really think she could resemble herself with any nation at all – she’s one of a kind!
What made you leave Iceland and go to Milan?
I’ve always been interested in design and graduated in graphic design, from the Icelandic Academy of the arts. I wanted to further my studies and now I’m taking the master in Interior design to fulfill that goal. Design is so related, no matter what field you talk about; you’re always using the creative parts of your brain, organizing things and finding solutions, so for me it’s perfect to add the interior design to my previous studies.
Italy has been a part of my heart since I came here several years ago and as I’ve followed fashion since I was a teenager, and now industrial and interior design, Milan was the perfect place for me to come to!
Milan is considered one of the fashion and design capitals. Do you think that's still true? Do you think Scandinavian design and fashion will give Italy a run for its money in the next few years?
Milan is definitely up there with other cities but they’re all different. For example, Amsterdam, I´d say, is the capital of creative design while Milan is the capital of classical design. The Scandinavian design is really going up now and I think it will be a fierce competitor for Italy, which I think is something the Italians are aware of but they really need to do something. They can’t just point out the old masters such as Michelangelo and the golden years of Italian design, 60’s and 70’s. There are a lot of young Italian designers that need more space in this grown country and an opportunity to show what they can do.
Are Italians generally open to foreigners - what are your experiences?
I’ve had a good experience with Italians. I think they’re open and helpful but very protective of their private lives, which for me is normal. I love the spirit here; happy, relaxed and no rush. Which often demands from you a lot of patience filling out papers and getting things done!
How about Icelanders? Any traits you would change if you could?
I’m proud of being Icelandic. We’re a country that has grown so fast in the last 100 years and I don’t think that I’d change anything now, even if I could. Or maybe, yes – we could be more relaxed and enjoy the Icelandic nature more.
What are your plans for your career and where are you headed next?
My plans are to finish my master in interior design in June and probably head back to Iceland. It doesn’t really matter where you live, the world is always getting smaller and it’s easy to communicate over the internet.
I’ve just started to work with another Icelandic designer who lives in the Netherlands, and hopefully we’ll get our website started soon where we can present our work and people will be able to contact us (jeej-design). But for sure I haven´t finished studying – because the more you learn, the more you want to learn!
